In a world blessed by peace for generations, a corp of fighter pilots must leave their homes across the globe to train in defense of Earth's freedom. Meanwhile, a powerful galactic enemy is rising in space with the strength to threaten not just the entire planet, but mankind's blossoming colonies beyond. The pilots are called into battle beyond the atmosphere to fight a war they could not possibly be prepared for. In fact, nothing can prepare them for the brutality of the war they are about to face. But for Clarion Maddox, the young captain who flees from a life of poverty to join the draft, the realities of war are chronicled through love, loss, survival,--and ultimately--hope.

The Children War T M Maxwell Books

Complete review best described in one phrase: Truly a wonderful piece.

Story Review:
I have not read many war tales where the main character is a woman of such strength and courage. Clare's leadership brings her the deepest of respect not only from her friends, but from the upper divisions as well. The tension between her and one of the male characters (trying to avoid spoilers here) keeps you turning the pages searching for their next interaction. You eventually find yourself cheering some characters onward while cringing at the sheer mentioning of others. It is truly surprising how realistic their thoughts, challenges and dreams are. Ever since I was young, I've always wanted to be an astronaut; this story takes my once distant aspirations and brings them to life once again. I can't help but look at the moon at night and think of Clare's voyage there.

Mechanics Review:
Each and every word was carefully placed. Throughout a page, you will encounter vivid metaphors with such a balance of adjectives, you think you're reading poetry. The author's use of these metaphors is so powerful that scenes are described in a quick clear manner - as opposed to other writings where just the setting's description runs for pages on end. In particular, the names and descriptions of galactic institutions and colonies are detailed in a manner that clearly maps out the entire political/military system. Not one for politics, I found the interactions between colonies explained fully, but not overly so that would distract you from the main story and characters.

Reflection:
This piece is truly original and worthwhile. Being one who has longed for the stars, this story quenched my thirst for exploring the vastness of space - a place man has yet to conquer.
