Aside from its rain and coffee, Seattle is known for many things subversive, from Grunge music to the activist driven WTO riots. This region of America raised the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Bruce Lee. Today, there is a culture here that is only represented anonymously in the reclaimed public spaces of the city. Images dot the urban landscape in the typical street mediums that are used across the globe spray paint, stickers, paste-ups, stencils, wheatpasting, posters, video projection, art intervention, guerrilla art, flash mobbing, installations, post-graffiti, mosaic tiling, murals, wood-blocking, LED art, reverse-graffiti a.k.a. green-graffiti, cuprocking and yarn bombing. You will see that these are not commercial enterprises or vandalism graffiti, but individual creative statements... something we can all relate to. Street art as a medium has been popularized internationally by the likes of Shepard Fairey, Banksy, D*Face, Paul Insect, Swoon, Twist, Neck face, Faile, Space Invader and WK Interact. It can take on many purposes and sometimes involves activism, phenomenology, repetition, attention capture, culture jamming, direct action, guerrilla messaging, propaganda, subvertising, decoration and territory claiming. The following is a small window into this temporary world that’s constantly being revised in a flux of new symbols. It’s a snapshot of work on the Seattle streets, a visual capsule in time, not a comprehensive representation of Seattle street art and the people involved over the years. Some of the work only existed for a day before it was written over by other artists or removed by the city... a reminder that nothing is permanent and, control is an illusion in the chaos of a city. Enjoy.

The photographer clearly has an eye for beauty. He locates it in obscure and ambiguous locations; places where the ordinary eye may not wander. The color contrasts are stunningly clean and the photos easy to digest. Seattle is home to such talented artists. The author displays respect and admiration in this published homage to Seattle's Street Artists by unveiling works fortuitously captured in time for all to see.Product details

Seattle Street Art A Visual Time Capsule Beyond Graffiti A Tarantino 9780615451909 Books Reviews
I love graffiti art and impermanence being the nature of it, makes this book so great to look through. The art is captured beautifully with the Author's artistic sensibilities. I highly recommend it.

Works of freedom and plays on light are displayed throughout. The gray-scale of the city,
and the blue sky, frame the colorful walls in these photos. Artists blend in recycled pieces like newspaper to
surprise the eye. Although Seattle's Street Art scene is not well known, this book lays out the
amazing things that are happening there. It contains some of the best OBEY work from Shepard Fairey I've
seen. I like to look through it when I need spaciousness and inspiration.
Let's start with photography. It is extremely depressing and dark; colors washed out and desaturated. Some photos lack sharpness, some angles leave much to be desired. These graffiti pieces on the streets jump out with vibrant colors, even if some photo editing is necessary to correct for photo capture. There are no photos that burn off the pages here, none!
Where this book ultimately suffers, is lack of context on any photos. No commentary, no locations, no follow-up with artists, no perspective. A lot of the pieces are rendered meaningless because they have no relation to their placement, and lose any emotional impact. You'll flip through this book in 5 minutes.
There are printing issues too. Mine came with all pages streaked with random horizontal light ink-bleed lines. I don't know if it's a desired effect (very distracting), but I suspect lousy printing.
One thing this book does right, is that it gives equal emphasis to various street-art forms classic graff, stencils, wheatpastes and stickers.
When compared to other street-art books in the same price range, you'll see you can get much more production value and 'coffee-table survivor' power from other books. You'll see brighter and more intricate pieces by browsing the Seattle Streetart Flickr group, often with more context too. I hope this critique encourages the author to address these issues in any following publications. Seattle deserves better.
